22° 36° 48° ROIRO

Diameter 345mm, 1.8kg, 18/8 Grade Stainless Steel, finished with Japanese lacquer.

Lacquer process
Japanese lacquer is applied to the 22° 36° 48° Bowl.

The first layer is called Ki-urushi.

The next layers to be applied are called Kuro-nakanuri lacquer (which means middle layers).
The goal of building up middle layers is to create a layer which is thick enough to make the base for the last finishing coat of the best quality black Urushi. A total of twelve of these middle layers of lacquer were applied and sanded to a perfect surface.
Then the last top layer of black Roiro-urushi is applied and sanded smooth.

Next ten very thin protective layers of Kijomi–urushi are then applied (the process called Suri-urushi).

Finally the bowl is polished by hand with a special polishing wax.

Concept
Why 22° 36° 48°?

The three possible angles at which the bowl can sit. At 22 degrees, the bowl holds its contents modestly. It becomes more inviting when tilted to 36 degrees. And, at 48 degrees, it flaunts its contents for you to share.

An outer wall with three cut holes and an inner wall with rim. The 22° 36° 48° is a double-walled, welded bowl.

Reflections in the mirror-finish hold secrets. Holes in the outer wall reflect in the inner wall. Objects in the bowl are mirrored. Often, in polite company, guests do not want to take the last piece. Here, that last piece is doubled. The guest reaching for the penultimate piece realises too late and clears the bowl.
